Soaring to Excellence

I was pleased to read the information (below the double lines) from Bonnie Young at Commonwealth Libraries. It seemed that once the teleconference links disappeared from the Soaring to Excellence website, the programs would be gone to us forever unless we wanted to purchase them at $95/DVD!

CCLS Training Advisory Team members should keep this information in mind if you are planning educational opportunities for your staff, or when you are helping me to plan educational events. As the name implies, these presentations are always excellent.

The next Soaring to Excellence presentation in the 2006 series Libraries, the Universe, and Everything will be Serving Immigrant Populations: A Library Prototype for Diversity. Broadcast Date: Friday, April 7, 2006 from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM in the Bosler Ashcraft House (CADM) Computer Training Room.

This teleconference begins with a look at the history of immigrants and libraries, and examines how to assess the needs your community’s immigrant population, including English as a Second Language materials, legal issues, work issues, and bi-lingual library resources.

Program Overview
- A very brief overview of the relationship between libraries and immigrants
- Introductions to the Borough of Queens Public Llibrary's New Americans Project and the Beardstown Houston Public Library's Outreach Services
- Determining the immigrant population community by community
- Rising to the Challenge
- Impact on existing programs
- Approaches to service
- Looking to the future

Message from Bonnie Young, Public Library Advisor, Office of Commonwealth Libraries, Bureau of Library Development (boyoung@state.pa.us)

Sometime after each Soaring to Excellence teleconference is over, I receive a video of the program from the College of DuPage. Currently, in my office I have two videos: "Google and Your Patrons," and "Always a River, Sometimes a Library."

Should you ever want to plan a continuing education opportunity using one of these, just let me know. You may borrow a video (I will mail it) if you will mail it back to me when your program is over.
